Here are my notes from Hyo Jin nim’s speech Sunday 02 July 2006.

My writing speed and ability to convey what was actually said are limited.

These at most convey some sense of what Hyo jin nim said and are not a verbatim record.

Rev. Eric Ersting is the MC and says "Lets all welcome Hyo jin nim" and everyone offers a half bow.

(Hyo Jin nim does a half bow to the audience; he brought a small notebook and opened it on the podium.)

This week’s topic is Love.

This past week some elder member came and asked for counseling about marriage and such. He was struggling about his marriage.

Every time you go to church some how you have to talk about love because everything else sucks!

I’m going to try to talk about love.

Individually we all have three basic propensities, physical, intellectual, and spiritual.

Somehow you have to figure out how to manage and control these three propensities.

Of the many problems we face dealing with these three propensities is the main cause. Dealing with other people exacerbates these problems.

So then how do we go about managing these three propensities?

The number ten is the number of perfection.

If you break down formation, growth, and perfection each into three stages then three stages of growth plus three stages of formation plus three stages of perfection plus one for completion equals ten (3 + 3 + 3 + 1 = 10).

Life is about controlling these phases.

If completion is ten stages then we have to manage ten stages.

There is always a standard.

On the formation level you have to overcome body (physical) mind (intellectual) and spirit (spiritual).

The stages go like this:

Physical, physical
Physical, intellectual
Physical, spiritual
Intellectual, physical
Intellectual, intellectual
Intellectual, spiritual
Spiritual, physical
Spiritual, intellectual
Spiritual, spiritual

Perfection

Look at those ten stages as having to be repeated three times, once for body, once for mind, and one for spirit.

So finally you have to go through about 30 hoops. (steps or stages)

Even when you go through the first ten steps this is just completion of the formation (or physical) stage.

You are just ready for conjugation.

You are in puberty.

To raise your children to perfection on the physical level you can think "if you play together you stay together." You need to spend time doing things with your kids.

Start with say, cooking. Then your kids can help you cook. While you’re doing this you can talk to your kids. You can have give and take. That is an important tool to raise your kids.

Next go beyond physical into intellectual.

Then go beyond intellectual into physical.

Every phase has three stages.

Formation, growth and perfection, correspond to body, mind, and spirit.

It is important to recognize this as such and to teach your children as such.

If not the temptations of the multi-media society will control your kids according to their agenda.

Their agenda is to become powerful and rich.

Even Bill Gates acquired enough material wealth that he finally feels like he has enough to give back to society. This is the highest standard based on the physical world.

These people control the multimedia and use it to indoctrinate you to gain wealth and power. Then they give with the same agenda.

Do you believe that all these folks really want to help us?

Who is next? Oprah. She says so many good things but she is very rich too and she has an agenda too. She knows that she has reached her end.

She knows "I controlled the past and present, but I know that I cannot control the future." That’s when to retire.

America is a great fighting force, but when you lose your teeth it hurts to chew.

When you look at your kids you can see that they struggle with physical-physical, physical-intellectual and physical-spiritual.

Next are intellectual-physical, intellectual-intellectual, and intellectual- spiritual.

The next phase is spiritual-physical, spiritual-intellectual, and spiritual-spiritual.

You know when your kids get into that (spiritual) stage that they try very hard to include you (their parents) in that stage.

They think about what you have told them over the years.

There comes a point where their intellect internalizes this and they figure it out.

If you know what’s right and wrong…

Everyone has a place to begin, how to begin to realize what right and wrong is.

That place might be in hell or on a high plateau. It does not matter.

God knew about right and wrong from the beginning but he gave us a choice.

The irony is that there is no choice.

Finally there is only one choice.

Finally you have to look at that guy in the mirror and determine how far and how high you will go.

We have to know who we are and not get ahead of ourselves.

It doesn’t matter if you think that you’re the greatest. According to who’s standard?

On American Idol (a very popular American TV show where there is competition to be a singing star) you can become a star.

In reality the producers of the show make so much money by making people stars.

Think about the time when people only listened to radio. If a singer just sounded good it wasn’t enough. A select few controlled the radio stations and they had the agenda to make money.

Now in the multi-media world on the face of it might seem like open competition but control of all the multi-media is still about politics.

All social wrongdoing can bleed into multi-media and affect society.

The big boys just know how to play the game.

I believe we can do it, but it takes investment. I believe that we have the wherewithal to do it.

Just go down the list: Physical-physical, physical-intellectual….etc.

If we have the qualified people just like the outside multi-media then we can do it.

How did FOX do it? They started out with a couple hit programs, Married with Children, The Simpson’s, then step-by-step they became a multimedia giant.

If we can invest billions into print media then we can do this.

It’s not about me becoming a star; it’s about us becoming a family.

I don’t think that there is anybody that knows me who will accuse me of that stuff. (Wanting to become a star)

What is past is past. We have to move on.

Wouldn’t it be great if every step that we took was the right step in the eyes of God?

Every choice we made was the right choice?

That should be our goal.

Hey! Take it or leave it.

It’s not to say that I don’t give up trying to build my self up from scratch.

What you see is what you get.

I’ll do my best and never lie to you and see what we can move.

We’ll see what more can happen.

(Hyo Jin nim pauses for a very long time, eyes closed with much emotion)

Take care of your self. See you next week.
