아벨 여성 유엔 창설 기념사-캐롤린 한신

On this historic occasion of the inauguration of the “Able UN Women”, we can look back over the 20 years since the establishment of the Women’s Federation for World Peace International in 1992 with profound gratitude for our Co-Founders Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon and with pride for the unprecedented achievements in such a short history. Yet it is known that for those whose dedication and sacrifice have paved this way, these successes have not been easily claimed. WFWP’s founding President set the agenda and pace with a global speaking tour that proclaimed the need for a paradigm shift to guide relations at all levels from a “logic of power” to a “logic of love” that should be led by women. This culminated with a very powerful speech delivered by her at the United Nations in 1993.

“아벨 여성 유엔”을 출범하는 이 역사적인 자리를 빌어20년 전인 1992년 세계평화여성연합이 창립된 이후 지금까지의 발자취를 되돌아 보며, 창립자이신 문선명, 한학자 총재 양위분께 깊은 감사를 드리며, 그처럼 짧은 시간 동안 전례 없는 성과를 거둔 데 대해 크나큰 자긍심을 가지지 않을 수 없습니다. 헌신과 희생으로 그 길을 닦으신 분들에 대해서는 알고 있지만, 이러한 성공을 쉽게 얻을 수 있었던 것이 아닙니다. 여성연합을 창설하신 총재님께서는 활동 목표를 정하시고 세계 순회 강연 길에 올라 모든 관계를 “힘의 논리”에서 여성이 주도하는 “사랑의 논리”로 이끄는 패러다임 전환의 필요성을 주장하셨습니다. 그리고 이것은 1993년 UN 의 연단에 서신 한학자 총재님의 강력하고 힘있는 연설로 절정에 달했습니다.

From that point, 1600 dedicated volunteers were sent from Japan to 100 countries with the vision and instructions to empower women in their capacities to take leading roles in community development and peacebuilding. This led to the establishment of WFWP chapters in nearly every country in the world in a remarkably short time, but this too came with great sacrifice and even loss of lives. One of the milestones in women’s agenda setting at the UN was the 4^th World Conference on Women in 1995 in Beijing where hundreds of WFWP members attended to begin the work of advocacy and education at the international level through events that were held there. Two years later, on the fifth anniversary of its creation, WFWP was granted “General” Consultative Status, opening the door for a partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Council at a level only awarded to a few.

그 때부터 지역사회 발전과 평화 구축에서 주도적인 역할을 할 수 있도록 여성이 자신의 역량을 발휘할 수 있게 해주는 비전과 지침을 가지고 헌신적인 일본 여성 자원봉사자 1,600명이 100개국으로 파견되었습니다. 이는 놀라울 정도로 짧은 시간 안에 세계 대부분 국가에 여성연합 지부를 세우는 계기가 되었지만, 여기에는 엄청난 희생이 뒤따랐고 심지어 생명이 희생되기도 했습니다. 유엔의 여성 어젠다에 중요한 전환점이 된 일 중 하나는 1995년 베이징에서 열린 제4회 세계여성컨퍼런스였습니다. 당시에 수 백 명의 여성연합 회원들이 그곳에서 열린 행사를 통해 세계적인 차원에서 옹호 활동과 교육을 시작하기 위해 참석했던 것입니다. 그로부터 2년 후, 창설 5주년을 맞은 여성연합은 몇몇 단체에게만 부여되는 유엔경제사회이사회 “제1영역” 자문 기관의 지위를 승인 받아, 유엔 경제사회이사회와의 파트너 관계에 포문을 열었습니다.

With the ongoing guidance and support of our Founders, WFWP has built up this partnership with agencies and bodies of the United Nations over the last fifteen years by proving its sincere and consistent effort for the accomplishment of its goals. Drawing upon the local programs of WFWP in the area of poverty eradication, humanitarian assistance, character education, “sisterhood ceremonies” of reconciliation or the promotion of responsible human rights, WFWP has been valued for providing insights into solutions that really work,. It has been acknowledged as well for bringing incentive to women and youth the world over to develop their capacities as leaders and role models to usher in a culture of peace and development through the element of motherly love and sacrifice.

세계평화여성연합은 창설자 양위분의 끊임없는 지도와 후원 하에 활동 목표 달성을 위해 꾸준하고 지속적인 노력을 경주함으로써 지난 15년 간 유엔 기구 및 단체들과 이 같은 협력관계를 구축했습니다. 여성연합은 기아퇴치, 인도적 지원, 인성 교육, 화합의 “자매 결연”, 신뢰할 수 있는 인권 증진 분야에서 현지 사정에 맞는 프로그램을 시행하여 실제로 효과 있는 해결책에 대한 통찰력을 제시한 점을 높이 평가 받고 있습니다. 또한 전 세계 여성과 청소년들에게 모성애와 희생을 통해 평화와 개발 문화를 선도하는 지도자와 롤모델로서의 역량을 개발하도록 장려한 일도 크게 인정을 받았습니다.

Thousands of government and UN representatives and international NGO’s have spoken and listened at conferences and symposia organized for them by WFWPI at UN Headquarters in New York, Geneva and Vienna and regional offices in an effort to share the burden of responsibility for our world. Former High Commissioner for Refugees, Mrs. Sadako Ogata, who has expressed her appreciation for the WFWPI initiative for reconciliation between the WWII “enemy” nations during a tour organized with that in mind, had also spoken publicly of her being deeply moved by the dedication of Japanese WFWP volunteers in their enthusiasm to get back to work in early post- genocide Rwanda during her visit there. This standard of love for the world has been learned through our training course in WFWP and the lifestyle and example of our Founders.

우리 세계에 대한 책임감의 부담을 나누기 위한 노력의 일환으로 수 천명의 정부 및 유엔, 국제 NGO대표들이 여성연합의 주최로 뉴욕, 제네바, 비엔나, 지역 사무소에서 개최된 컨퍼런스 및 심포지엄에 참석해 주제 발표를 하고 의견을 나누었습니다. 그 점을 염두에 두고 준비된 한 순회에서 사다코 오가타 전 유엔난민고등판무관은 세계2차대전 “적대국”간의 화해를 이끌어 낸 여성연합의 이니셔티브에 감사를 표했으며, 또한 르완다를 방문했을 때는 대량 학살이 있은 후 조기에 업무 복귀 하는 열의를 보였던 일본인 여성연합 자원봉사자들의 헌신에 크게 감동받았다는 말씀을 공식석상에서 하기도 했습니다. 이러한 세상에 대한 사랑의 표준은 여성연합의 교육 과정과 생활 방식, 창립자분들의 모범을 통해 습득된 것입니다.

During these 20 years of WFWP development, thousands of women and girls have come many steps closer to realizing their true and feminine value to the world and have greatly improved their lives and the lives of those around them. I believe all of us share the same enthusiasm to contribute all that we have gained, and more, to the success of the new “Abel UN Women”.

지난 20년간 여성연합이 발전해 오는 동안 수 천명의 여성과 소녀들이 세상에 대해 자신들의 참되고 여성적인 가치를 깨닫는데 한층 다가섰으며 자기 자신과 주변의 삶을 크게 증진시켰습니다. 저는 우리가 가진 모든 것을 새로운 “아벨 여성 유엔”의 성공을 위해 기여하는데 우리 모두가 똑 같은 열의를 가지고 있음을 확신합니다.
