Remarks on the Occasion of the Launch of the “Women UN”

On the occasion of the launch of the “Women UN”, and on behalf of the Universal Peace Federation International, I would like to express the highest appreciation to the Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon, as the Founders and inspiration for this great initiative. With their blessing, guidance and support, I have no doubt that this global effort will stand at the center of God’s providence and will bear great fruit for the benefit of all the people of the world.

“여성 유엔” 창설을 맞이하여 천주평화연합을 대표해 창설자이신 문선명 총재 양위분께 이처럼 훌륭한 이니셔티브에 대한 영감을 주신데 대해 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 두 분의 축복과 인도, 지원으로 이 같은 세계적인 노력이 하나님의 섭리의 중심에 우뚝 서서 세계 만인을 위해 훌륭한 결실을 맺을 것임을 믿어 의심치 않습니다.

The ideal of a “United Nations” that came into being in 1945 in the aftermath of World War II represents the universal aspiration for peace that is embedded from the beginning of time in our spiritual and moral DNA as human beings and as the sons and daughters of God. This noble ideal has taken on a variety of forms, on both the global and regional levels, for example, the League of Nations as a forerunner to the current United Nations, or the European Union and the African Union as regional intergovernmental associations. The various leagues or associations of nation states or governments have been formed for the sake fostering diplomacy solutions and peaceful negotiation between and among states, as a means to avoid conflict and to promote human development.

세계 2차 대전의 여파로 1945년 창설된 “국제연합”의 이상은 하나님의 자녀이자 인간으로서 태초부터 우리의 영적, 윤리적 DNA 속에 깊이 새겨져 있던 평화에 대한 열망을 나타냅니다. 이 숭고한 이상은 현재의 국제연합의 전신인 국제 연맹이나 지역 내 국가간 연합인 유럽 연합, 아프리카 연합 같이 세계 및 지역 수준 모두에서 다양한 형태를 띠었습니다. 국가나 정부의 다양한 연맹이나 연합은 분쟁을 피하고 인류 발전을 증진시키기 위한 수단으로서 국가간 외교적 문제 해결과 평화적 협상을 촉진하기 위해 만들어졌습니다.

The state system that underlies these efforts and which we have known since the Peace of Westphalia of 1648, which ended the 30 years war in Europe, is undergoing significant changes. Increasingly, non-state actors and transnational movements, including civil society organizations, NGOs, faith based organizations, and the private sector, play equally important roles in world affairs. These developments have raised awareness that progress toward peace and development is not the exclusive responsibility of governments.

이러한 노력의 기초가 되고 유럽의 30년 전쟁을 종료시킨 1648년 베스트팔렌 평화조약 이후의 국가 체계는 엄청난 변화를 겪고 있습니다. 시민사회단체, NGO, 종교 단체, 민간 부문을 비롯해 비정부 운동가들과 초국가적 운동이 점점 국제 사회에서 똑같이 중요한 역할을 하고 있습니다. 이러한 진전은 평화와 개발을 향한 진보가 정부에게 국한된 책임이 아니라는 인식을 일깨웠습니다.

In August of the year 2000, Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon, spoke at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and proposed that the United Nations establish an interreligious council as an integral part of the UN system, underscoring the global significance of religion and faith-based organizations as essential partners necessary to complete the work that governments had set out to do. Moreover, harmony and cooperation among religions was of paramount importance for peace. While seemingly a radical call to action at the time, just one year later the world was shocked when religious extremists carried out the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York.

2000년 8월, 문선명 총재는 뉴욕의 유엔 본부에서 한 연설에서 국가가 하려고 하는 일을 완수하는데 필요한 주요 파트너로서 국제사회에서 종교와 종교 기반 단체의 중요성을 강조하며 유엔 체제 하에 초종교의회를 설치할 것을 제안했습니다. 더욱이 종교 간의 화합과 협력은 평화에 있어서 매우 중요한 요소입니다. 당시에는 그 말씀이 극단적인 요구인 듯 보였지만, 겨우 일년 후에 종교적 과격론자들이 뉴욕의 세계무역센터에 테러 공격을 가했을 때 세계는 충격에 빠졌습니다.

Dr. Moon, over the years, has frequently spoken of the need to establish an “Abel UN”, drawing inspiration from the faithfulness of the biblical figure, Abel, who was a God-centered man who offered the fruits of his labors to God. This should be the essential quality of those who serve the mission of the United Nations.

그 동안 문총재께서는 성서에 나오는 인물인 아벨의 신앙심에서 영감을 얻어 “아벨 유엔” 설립의 필요성에 대해 자주 언급하셨습니다. 아벨은 자신의 노동의 결실을 하나님께 바쳤던 하나님을 중심 한 인물로, 이는 유엔의 사명을 위해 일하는 사람들이 필수적으로 갖춰야 할 자질일 것입니다.

As significant as the role of governments and the role of religion is for peace and development, so too is the role of women. In many respects the “state system” that resulted in the United Nations we know was an outgrowth of a male-dominated world. Since 1945, however, we have seen the rise of women and a growing awareness of not merely the equality of women, but the ultimate and unique value and capacities of women to lead the world toward peace. This year marks the 20^th anniversary of the founding of the Women’s Federation for World Peace, Chaired by Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, a shining example of the rise of a “women’s movement” that, like the biblical Abel, is God-centered, oriented to practicing unselfish public-service, strengthening the family, and building a global society characterized by peace and prosperity.

평화와 발전을 위해 정부의 역할과 종교의 역할이 중요한 만큼 여성의 역할도 중요합니다. 여러 측면에서, 우리가 알고 있는 국제 연합에서 나타나는 “국가 체계”는 남성 지배적인 세상의 부산물입니다. 그러나 1945년 이후, 우리는 여성의 신장과 단지 남녀 평등뿐만 아니라 세계를 평화로 이끄는 여성의 궁극적이고 특별한 가치와 역량에 대한 인식 증가를 보았습니다. 올해는 한학자 총재께서 의장으로 계신 세계평화여성연합 창설 20주년을 맞이하는 해입니다. 여성연합은 성서 속 아벨처럼 하나님을 중심하고 이타적인 공공 서비스를 실천하며 가정을 강화하고, 평화와 번영의 국제 사회 건설에 중점을 둔 “여성 운동” 신장의 훌륭한 본보기입니다.

The launch of the “Women UN” today builds on that foundation, and is remarkable for several reasons. First of all, this initiative begins here in the Asia-Pacific Region and, we can say, at the time of the blossoming of the Asia Pacific Era. Secondly, it represents an essentially positive, forward-looking initiative that builds on the God-given value of women, and that rightfully affirms the natural capacities of women, that have so often been suppressed or uncultivated over millennia. These positive developments have been made possible due to divine providence that has been guiding humanity, through religion, culture and the history of ideas toward a new age of peace and freedom. Such an era can only unfold as women take on their leading role in world affairs. The era of the pacific and the era of woman are rising hand in hand. Just as the United Nations was led by men of the Atlantic era, the Roosevelts and Churchills, the “Women UN” marks a dramatic shift, and an idea who’s time has come.

오늘 “여성 유엔”의 발족은 바로 그 기반 위에 세워질 것이며 여러 가지 이유에서 주목할 만한 일입니다. 우선, 이 이니셔티브는 이곳 아시아 태평양 지역에서 시작되는데, 지금은 아시아 태평양 시대가 꽃피우는 때라고 할 수 있기 때문입니다. 둘째, 여성 유엔 이니셔티브는 하나님이 주신 여성의 가치 위에 세워지며, 수 천 년간 억압되고 개척되지 않은 여성의 천부적인 역량을 제대로 주장하는 본질적으로 긍정적이고 진보적인 이니셔티브를 나타냅니다. 이러한 긍정적인 발전은 종교, 문화, 사상의 역사를 통해 인류를 자유와 평화의 새 시대로 인도한 하늘의 섭리가 있었기에 가능했습니다. 여성이 세계 무대에서 주도적인 역할을 할 때 이러한 시대가 펼쳐질 수 있습니다. 태평양 시대와 여성의 시대가 함께 떠오르고 있습니다. 국제 연합을 루즈벨트와 처칠의 대서양 시대의 남성이 이끌었듯이, “여성 유엔”은 극적인 변화와 누구의 시대가 왔는가에 대한 생각을 나타냅니다.

We are grateful to Dr. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon, our True Parents, for their leadership and foresight, their wisdom and courage. We are the recipients of a great blessing today. Long live the Women UN and may it flourish, for the sake of God and all humanity.
