A rally to support the reunification of the Korean peninsula and the development of the Demilitarized zone (DMZ) as a world peace park was held at Imjingak in Paju, Korea (about 40 miles east from Seoul, Korea) on August 24, 2013. Approximately 1,600 people, including 300 Korean residents in Japan and 600 VIPs from 70 nations gathered for the event. American members on hand included three younger leaders: Naokimi Ushiroda, David Hunter and Crescentia DeGoede.

As part of this event, Korean residents in Japan rode bicycles from Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido, took sea transport to South Korea and continued biking to Imjingak, a city at the edge of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The distance for the bike ride was about 3800 km (about 2360 miles). The bikers began on August 3rd and rallied in Imjingak on August 24th.

Before the main event there were congratulatory performances and a video about the idea of a DMZ Peace Park.

The order of events are as follows: Welcoming remarks by emcee Mr. Kwang Seok Song, Secretary General of Citizen’s Federation for Unification; the Peace Park Video; Greetings to the Korean-Japanese cross country bikers; congratulatory special performances; an opening speech; several congratulatory messages; words of encouragement; a public reading of the resolution for Peace and Unification; three cheers of Mansei; and the ringing of the Peace Bell.

During the event, they showed the video of the 3800 km cycling journey. After the video, greeting for the Korea-Japan cross country participants were followed. First to celebrate the Peace Rally and as a means to connect this event to world peace, representatives from 70 nations entered the event place riding their bicycle while carrying their national flags. Then the cross-country bicyclists entered. Dr. Chang Shik Yang, practical director; Mr. Yong Su Seol, director of the rally, and Mr. Tea Su Park, vice-mayor of Paju city, presented a flower necklace and medal to the cross-country participants.

The Korean Team leader of the cross-country bicyclists, Mr. Hyeong Mo Leen said, “It was hard, but I rode with the hope for unification of South and North Korea.” Mr. Jin Ho Yu, 700 km participant, said, “It was hard at first but I finished with a joyful heart and prayed for the unification of Korea.”

Mr. Tea Su Park said in his greeting message: ”People who rode bicycles from Hokkaido to Imjingak, please remain strongly determined for a peaceful unification. I wish for this cross country event to become a historical event that where we can someday bike up to China and Russia and contribute to world peace and peace in the Korean peninsula. It’s been a year since respected the Rev. Sun Myung Moon passed away. I sincerely cherish Rev. Moon and I wish Rev. Moon’s will to world peace and one family to become true.”

Dr. Chang Shik Yang explained the meaning of the event with his message of encouragement: “This rally was planned as part of the commemorative events for the one-year Seonghwa (Ascension) Anniversary to honor the man who lived his whole life for the peaceful unification of Korea. Rev. Moon sacrificed throughout his 93 years of life to build an international foundation for the unification of Korea. He suffered pain from a wounded heart because of the separation of Korea. I believe this event was very meaningful because Japan, which contributed to the separation of Korea, recognizes that reunification of Korea will bring peace in Asia. It is significant that in order to further world peace, these cross-country bicyclists crossed the Sea of Hyunhe [sovereign sea] to remove the barrier at the 38th parallel.“

Afterwards, Mr. Gyeong Deuk Yu, president of the Youth Federation for World Peace and Unification-Korea (YFWPU), read the Peace Unification resolution.

2013 Resolution for World Peace and Unification

1. Leaders, who desire world peace, wish for the peaceful unification of the Korean peninsula, which symbolizes the Cold War in the 20th Century, and we envision reunification as the commencement of an era of peace in the 21st century.

2. Leaders, who desire world peace, we wish to maintain efforts to build trust and peace development between North and South Korea. We determine to cooperate internationally to build trust on the Korean peninsula and to establish a DMZ peace park.

3. Leaders, who desire world peace, will participate in the 2013 World Peace and Unification Rally’ and wish for fulfillment of the vision of world peace and the ideal of true family that Rev. Sun Myung Moon promoted around the world. In order to build this international network, we determine to work together.

천일국 원년 7월 18일(양 8.24) 오전 11시 파주 임진각에서 한반도 통일과 DMZ 세계평화공원 실현을 위한 2013 세계70개국 평화통일대회가 국내귀빈과, 재일동포 300명, 70개국가 600명의 외빈등 약1600 여명이 모인가운데 파주 임진각에서 개최 됐다.

본행사에 앞서 식전행사로 10시 40분부터 DMZ 평화공원 영상 시청과 뜻깊은 행사를 하늘과 땅 천지에 고하는 원커뮤니케이션의 아리랑 북춤, 영원한 음악이라는 뜻을 가진 무지카 에트리나의 축가(넬라판타지아, 엄마야 누나야), 재일동포 여성들의 합창(임진강, 후루사또)의 축하공연이 펼쳐졌다.

본 행사는 송광석 남북통일운동국민연합 사무총장의 사회로 개회선언및 내빈소개, 비디오 상영, 한일 자전거국토종주단 환영식, 특별축하공연, 대회사, 환영사, 축사, 격려사, 평화통일 결의문 낭독, 평화통일기원 퍼포먼스, 통일의 노래, 만세삼창, 평화의 종 타종식 행사 순으로 진행 됐다.

비디오 상영을 통해 지난 8월3일 일본 북해도에서부터 출발하여 오늘 임진각에 이르기까지 22일 동안 3800km 달려온 한일 양국의 자전거 종주 모습을 영상으로 만나볼 수 있었다.

비디오 상영이 끝나고 한일 자전거 국토종주단 환영식이 이어졌다. 먼저 오늘의 통일대회를 축하하고 세계평화로 연결시키겠다는 의미로 70개국의 대표단들이 각국의 국기를 꽂은 자전거를 타고 입장한 후 한국과 일본의 종주자들이 자전거를 타고 입장 했고 양창식 대회 실행위원장과 설용수 대회장, 박태수 파주시 부시장이 한국과 일본의 종주자들에게 꽃목걸이와, 완주기념 메달을 전달 했다.

한국팀의 이형모 팀장은 "힘들기는 했지만 남북통일의 희망을 안고 열심히 달렸다"고 소감을 말했고 폐수술을 두번이나 했지만 이번에 700km를 완주한 유진호 학생은 "처음에는 힘들었지만 재미있게 즐기는 마음으로 통일을 기원하는 마음으로 종주하였다"고 소감을 말했다. 일본팀의 한 팀원은 "일본에서는 38도선을 넘어서 남쪽으로 내려왔습니다. 38도선에서 분단선에서 철폐하는 의식을 하면서 이곳까지 왔기 때문에 한반도의 휴전선이 철폐될 것입니다"라고 소감을 말했다.

환영식이 끝나고 한일 국토종주를 축하하는 리틀엔젤스의 특별 축하공연이 펼쳐졌다. 리틀엔젤스예술단은 아리랑, You Raise me up, 도레미송의 세곡을 통해 참석자들에게 아름다운 하모니를 선사했다.

설용수 대회장은 "오늘 통일의 열기를 승화시켜서 북한 지도부를 깨우치고 중국과 러시아가 한반도에 관심을 갖고 한국과 일본이 다시한번 화해를 하고 중국까지도 하나가 되는 동북아 대역사적 화합의장을 통일의장을 평화의장을 만들기 위해서 이자리가 만들어 졌습니다"라고 대회사를 했다.

어어 한옥수 전 조총련 상공회의소 의장의 인사말씀과 박태수 파주시 부시장의 환영사가 진행됐다. 박태수 파주시 부시장은 환영사를 통해"훗카이도에서 임진각까지 대장정을 이겨내신 여러분의 평화통일 의지를 굳건히 다져 주십시오. 이번 국토종주가 중국과 러시아까지 이어가는 역사적인 종주가 되고 이로써 세계평화와 한반도 통일에 기여할 수 있기를 기원합니다. 존경하는 문선명 총재님께서 성하하신지가 1년이 되었습니다. 진심으로 추모하며 세계평화 창건의 인류대가족을 실현하고자 했던 문총재님의 반드시 이루어 지기를 기원합니다."라고 희망의 메시지를 전했다.

이어 현경대 민주평화통일자문회의 수석부의장의 축사를 신영석 평화문제연구소 이사장의 대독과 양창식 실행위원장의 격려사가 진행됐다.

양창식 실행위원장은 "본대회는 1년전에 생애를 평화통일 위해 사시다가 성화하신 문선명 총재님의 1주기 추모행사의 일환으로 기획이 되어진 것입니다. 문총재님은 93년 생애를 이땅에 분단의 아픔과 상처를 가슴에 품고 통일을 위한 세계적인 기반조성에 전력을 다하시다가 가셨습니다. 오늘 다시 이 그어진 38선을 철폐하고 조국의 통일을 이루기 위해서 현해탄을 건너서 분단의 원인 제공자였던 일본이 앞장서서 한반도의 통일이 아시아에 더나아가서 세계평화에 기여한다는 뜻을 받고 함께한다고 하는것은 대단히 의미있다고 생각할 수 있습니다."라고 격려사를 통해 본행사의 의의에 대해 설명했다.

이어 세계평화통일청년연합 유경득 한국회장의 평화통일 결의문 낭독이 진행 됐다.

2013 세계70개국 평화통일대회 결의문

1. 세계평화를 염원하는 지도자들은 20세기 냉전의 상징인 한반도 분단의 현장 임진각에 모여 평화통일이 실현되기를 바라며 한반도가 분단을 넘어 21세기 평화의 출발점이 될 수 있도록 지원할 것을 결의한다.

2. 세계평화를 염원하는 지도자들은 남북간 신뢰구축과 평화증진을 위한 다양한 노력들이 지속되기를 바라며 한반도 신뢰프로세스와 DMZ세계평화공원 실현이 빠른 시일에 실현될 수 있도록 국제적 협력을 다할 것을 결의한다.

3. 세계평화를 염원하는 지도자들은 '2013 세계70개국 평화통일대회'에 참석하여 문선명 총재가 주창한 세계평화의 비전과 참가정의 이상이 전 세계적으로 확산되기를 바라며 이를 위해 국제적인 네트워크를 형성하여 함께 동참할 것을 결의한다.

평화통일 결의문 낭독이 끝나고 평화통일기원 퍼포먼스로 세계70개국 대표자들과 자전거 종주자들이 나와 평화의 상징인 40마리의 비둘기를 하늘로 날려보냈고 다함께 통일의노래를 불렀다.

이어 김주섭 서울시 UPF 평화대사협의회 서울시 회장의 만세삼창과 평화의종 타종식을 끝으로 한반도 통일과 DMZ 세계평화공원 실현을 위한 2013 세계70개국 평화통일대회가 종료 됐다.
